The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
